IBSA launches orodispersible film supplements in new European countries

Improving people’s quality of life through the research and development of products and technologies that meet their real needs is what drives IBSA. Today, this mission is further confirmed by the launch of food supplements containing iron, vitamin D3 and vitamin B12 in orodispersible film (ODF) format in several European countries.

As thin as a postage stamp, the films are made using the patented FilmTec® technology and dissolve quickly when they come into contact with saliva. Their precise dosing and rapid release make treatment easier and more practical, even for people who have difficulty swallowing.

A WELL-ESTABLISHED TECHNOLOGY, NOW AVAILABLE IN NEW COUNTRIES

The launch involves three supplements, now available in orodispersible film format:

  • Iron, containing iron and folic acid (vitamin B9), which supports normal red blood cells and haemoglobin formation, and helps reduce tiredness and fatigue;
  • Vitamin D3, which supports the normal function of the immune system, bone health and the absorption of calcium and phosphorus;
  • Vitamin B12, which supports normal energy metabolism.

IBSA’s orodispersible film food supplements, already available in Italy, Switzerland, France and the United States, are now being introduce in more international markets: the range will soon be launched in Spain, UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Austria.

THE FILMTEC® MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Behind this innovation is a complex production process, which IBSA has successfully developed from research to full-scale industrial manufacturing. The FilmTec® technology requires very high technological standards, which only a handful of companies worldwide have achieved.

A distinctive feature of this technology is the use of maltodextrin as the main component. This water-soluble polymer, derived from corn starch and with a neutral taste, offers greater strength and elasticity than other polymers. Its versatility allows for the precise incorporation and dosing of a wide range of functional ingredients.

A crucial stage in the process is the coating technique, which ensures even distribution of the active ingredients across the surface of the film. It involves dissolving the ingredients in water, spreading them uniformly over a belt, then subjecting the layer to controlled evaporation before it is cut and packaged into single-dose blisters.

A PERSON-CENTERED APPROACH

With these launches, IBSA strengthens its international presence and confirms its ability to turn scientific research into real, accessible solutions that respond to people’s actual needs. Orodispersible films are the result of a person-centred approach, offering easier and more accurate administration.

IBSA is among the few companies worldwide capable of offering such an advanced and versatile technological platform on a large scale – a result that reflects the company’s commitment to transforming research into accessible solutions, designed to simplify people’s lives.
